if you know what great writing is, DEVOUR this book. he is one of kings most charismatic characters. reviewed by: apple allengeorgiana, alabama when my son was 12 years old, he couldn't find his backside with a tour guide and a map. this story is so wonderful i read it at least 2x a year.i'm still rivited by jack's dark journey.
I actually think the two authors really complimented each other. I actually believe I read the book over 15 years ago and the picture of the Osh Kosh bib overalls still is vivid in my mind. As I am reviewing this book I have decided to re-read it because I have rekindled some memories of the first reading. Stephen King tends to get very bizarre and weird toward the end of his books and I think Straub helped to tone him down a bit on this one. It was extremely exciting and was definitely a page turner. I read this book a long time ago and decided to write a review after seeing someone else's review of Shadowland by Peter Straub.
It was extremely difficult for me to put down. I also read Floating Dragon by Peter Straub which was good but not quite as good as this one. This book took me to a totally different place. This book did so much to help me to visualize the scene and the characters. I am looking forward to reading Shadowland. It actually took me to another place and time and actually put me into the character's shoes.
I have not read too many books that have actually disconnected me from this time and placed me somewhere else for a period of time as this one did.
What a cool concept King came up with. There's nothing worse than the feeling when you've finished a King book are realize your done. Black House the sequel was OK, I just wished it had followed more along this story line of the Talisman and the alternate world. But aren't all King books a must read. One critical review said it was too long. What an amazing mind. Attention problems. Oh good grief. Who on earth complains about a King book being too long.
I recommend this book to those who love King's other epic tales. Peter Straub injects a fresh perspective and together they keep you captivated. If you read Stephen King and enjoyed his writing style, you'll love this one just as much.
This is more than a novel. I fell into this tale of Jack Sawyer as he journeyed between worlds in an effort to save his dying mother. A Stephen King fan must-read.
I fell in, like Alice down the rabbit hole, and I just never wanted to find my way back out. Also recommended to those who enjoy a good fantasy-turned-mainstream. It's an epic tale.
This one hits home in the same way that The Stand and the Dark Tower series does.
Highly reccomended. This novel has tons of great characters and landscapes and is just all around an extremely cool book. King teams up with peter straub this time and delivers an amazing unforgettable story. The way king and straub guide us through a parallel world known as the territories with young jack sawyer on a quest to save his dying mother is superb.
